Client:

Pennyfarthing Homes

Industry and Development Context:

  • Residential Development
  • Greenfield Site

Services Provided:

Key Outcomes:

  • Major archaeological works delivered within budgetary allowances despite denser than anticipated archaeology encountered
  • Public engagement achieving additional public benefits

Summary of Work:

The work needed to discharge the planning condition comprised an archaeological excavation and recording of these archaeological remains of interested identified during the evaluation.

Landgage Heritage agreed the scope of the excavation work, and obtained competitive quotes from suitable archaeological contractors to implement the works required. Landgage also managed the implementation of the works on the client’s behalf.

The archaeological excavation uncovered the remains of a landscape that had been occupied during the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the Roman period. The remains were of significant local interest and a programme of public outreach was implemented in partnership with the local authority archaeologist, including a visit by local cub scouts.

The archaeological remains uncovered were denser than was anticipated by the results of the evaluation. However, through careful scrutiny of the work programme and negotiation with the archaeological contractor, the works were delivered within the agreed budgets and allowances.
